Rock crystal, a variety of quartz, forms deep within the Earth over millions of years. Through hydrothermal processes, silicon dioxide crystallizes in cavities within rocks and slowly grows into clear, pure points. The clarity depends on the purity of the growth process and the surrounding mineral environment. The longer the crystal can grow, the larger it becomes – but this often results in natural inclusions, which is why large and exceptionally clear points are rare.
