Origin and Formation

Moldavites formed about 14.8 million years ago during the impact of a huge meteorite in the area of today’s Nördlinger Ries in Germany. The tremendous impact energy hurled molten rock fragments hundreds of kilometers, which mainly fell back to earth in today’s South Bohemia in the Czech Republic.

During their flight through the atmosphere, they solidified into the characteristic green natural glass we now know as moldavite.
