How Does Pyrite Form on Matrix?

Pyrite (FeS₂) is a naturally occurring iron sulfide. Under suitable geological conditions, iron and sulfur can react with each other, causing pyrite to crystallize within or on the surrounding rock.

Pyrite crystallizes in the cubic crystal system. This is why it can develop remarkably geometric forms with straight edges and clearly defined faces. When the crystals remain connected to their original host rock, a natural pyrite specimen on matrix is formed.

The formation of such minerals takes place over extremely long geological periods. Differences in shape, color, matrix, crystal size and arrangement make each specimen unique.
