🌍 Origin & Phantom Lines

Phantom quartz forms over millions of years due to an interruption in crystal growth. As the crystal matures, its growth is temporarily interrupted by sediment or mineral deposits. This layer of foreign matter is deposited on top of the existing crystal structure. Once growth resumes, a new layer of quartz grows over the previous one, forming fine lines or shadowy shapes inside the crystal.

The so-called phantom lines are caused by enclosed minerals such as chlorite (greenish phantoms), hematite (reddish phantoms), or iron oxide (brownish to yellowish phantoms). These lines appear as thin, nebulous or well-defined growth steps within the crystal. Each of these layers represents a pause in the crystal's formation history, similar to the annual rings of a tree.

Phantom quartz comes in several varieties, including phantom amethyst , phantom citrine , or phantom smoky quartz , depending on which minerals were involved in the growth process.
