Origin and formation

Moldavites were formed about 14.8 million years ago during the impact ofa huge meteorite in the area of today's Nördlinger Ries in Germany. The immense impact energy flung molten rock fragments hundreds of kilometers, which mainly fell back to earth in what is now South Bohemia in the Czech Republic.

During their flight through the atmosphere, they solidified into the characteristic green natural glass we now know as moldavite.
